When a child does well, the whole community celebrates. Good news are the feathers of the one in front and the ones pushing behind. That is the story of Agbara Nla – The Return, which has turned its return to the cinema into a remarkable record-breaking moment for Mount Zion Film Productions (MZFP).
Just four days into its cinema screening, Agbara Nla – The Return has grossed ₦170.6 million, while reaching an estimated 28,500 souls. The achievement places the film among the most successful Nollywood releases of the period and marks a significant milestone for Christian filmmaking in Nigeria.
The film, released in cinemas on 1 October 2026, is a remake of the 1993 Mount Zion classic Agbara Nla. More than three decades after the original captivated audiences, its return has connected with a new generation while retaining the evangelical context that made the story memorable.
According to the released figures by the Nigerian Box Office, Agbara Nla – The Return recorded the biggest faith-based opening of all time, the biggest single-day preview admissions in West Africa, with more than 12,100 admissions, and the biggest single-day preview gross ever recorded, exceeding ₦71 million.
The film also recorded the biggest first-day gross for a Nollywood title ever, became the number-one movie of the week, and achieved the biggest single-day gross for October. Its opening weekend was equally historic, ranking as the third-biggest Nollywood opening weekend of all time, the biggest non-December Nollywood opening weekend of all time, and the biggest October opening weekend of all time.
For Mount Zion, however, the significance of the achievement goes beyond box-office figures. The film demonstrates the growing capacity of Christian productions to compete successfully within Nigeria’s mainstream cinema industry while remaining faithful to their message and purpose.
The success also reflects the value of investing in Christian drama, Biblical dramatisation, storytelling, professional filmmaking and the development of creative talent. Through Mount Zion Faith Ministries and its educational arm, Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama, the organisation has spent decades nurturing people and using the stage and screen as instruments for ministry and social impact.
Most importantly, the 28,500 souls impacted gives the record a deeper meaning. Beyond the revenue, admissions and industry rankings driven into the creative economy are thousands of people who have encountered the story and its message. That is the kind of achievement that cannot be measured by figures alone.
Agbara Nla – The Return has therefore done more than revive a classic. It has brought an old story into a new era, broken significant cinema records and demonstrated once again that Christian themed-films can command a strong audience in Nigeria’s evolving film industry.
With ₦170.6 million already recorded after just four days, the journey is far from over. Agbara Nla – The Return has returned to the cinema, and in doing so, Mount Zion has entered a new chapter of its film legacy.
