ZRT Physical Training

Rehearsals of ZRT in MZI

Physical Training (PT) Programme at MZI

Policy Designation: MZI Student Welfare & Professional Development Frequency: Every weekend (Saturday) during academic session Organizing Body: Zion Royal Theatre (ZRT) – the theatre company of MZI Attendance: Mandatory for all enrolled students

Rationale and Objectives

Physical Training at Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama is not merely a fitness routine but an integral component of the student's professional formation in Theatre Arts (Christian Drama). The demands of stage and film production—long rehearsal hours, sustained vocal projection, choreographed movement sequences, and the physical stamina required for touring ministry—necessitate a body that is conditioned, resilient, and injury-resistant. Consequently, MZI, through its theatre company Zion Royal Theatre (ZRT), mandates weekly physical training sessions for all students whenever the academic session is active.

Structure of the Session

Each Physical Training (PT) session at MZI, organized by Zion Royal Theatre (ZRT), is structured into three sequential segments. The session begins with forty minutes of supervised physical conditioning, including jogging, calisthenics, dynamic stretching, and core stability drills designed to build the stamina, flexibility, and breath control required for sustained stage and film performance. Immediately following the physical warm-down, students receive a fifteen-minute professional development lecture delivered by a ZRT faculty member or visiting professional, covering rotating topics such as theatre management, technical skills, ethical protocols, marketing for gospel drama, and legal literacy for artists. Upon conclusion of the lecture, the ZRT percussion team assumes leadership for the remaining time, engaging students in rhythmic exercises using traditional drums, shakers, and body percussion. This segment develops musical timing, fosters ensemble cohesion, and serves as supplementary ear training for students specializing in Music Theatre or Dance and Choreography. The session concludes with a collective rhythmic crescendo and brief cool-down, ensuring that students leave physically exercised, intellectually equipped, and rhythmically united.

Dress kit of ZRT

Dress Kit

Approved Attire: All students must report to PT wearing the official Zion Royal Theatre (ZRT) kit. The kit consists of a branded ZRT polo shirt or jersey, paired with dark shorts or track pants (as specified at the beginning of each academic session), and closed-toe athletic shoes. No jewelry, watches, or accessories that could cause injury during physical activity are permitted. Sanctions for Non-Compliance: Students who arrive without the complete ZRT kit, or who fail to participate actively without a valid medical exemption documented with the MZI administration, will be subject to disciplinary measures as outlined in the student handbook (e.g., extra drills, written assignments on professional discipline, or deduction from participation grades).

Evangelical and Professional Significance

Beyond physical and technical benefits, the weekly PT session reinforces a core value of MZI and ZRT: that the messenger must be as disciplined as the message. A body kept fit honours God as the temple of the Holy Spirit. A mind sharpened through weekly technical lectures serves the evangelical mission with competence. A spirit united through percussion and collective movement reflects the harmony of believers labouring together in Christian theatre. Thus, every Saturday, the grounds of MZI in Ile-Ife echo not only with the sounds of drumming and footfalls but with the silent formation of disciplined, prepared, and spiritually alert agents of gospel drama.
