The Professional Certificate in Christian Theatre Arts is an intensive three-month practical training programme of the Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama designed for aspiring Christian filmmakers, actors, directors, writers, theatre practitioners, and creative ministers who desire to develop their gifts for effective Kingdom service.

The programme combines the spiritual foundation of Christian drama ministry with professional theatre and filmmaking skills. Participants will not only learn what makes an effective production; they will be actively involved in the creative process—from developing ideas and scripts to acting, directing, handling production equipment, rehearsing, and bringing theatre and film projects to life.

What to Expect

This is not primarily a classroom-based programme. Training is structured around 40% theory and 60% hands-on practical experience, giving participants substantial opportunities to learn by doing. Classes will combine demonstrations, workshops, creative exercises, rehearsals, practical assignments, collaborative productions, feedback sessions, and supervised projects.

Participants should expect an intensive, creative, spiritually purposeful and highly participatory learning environment consistent with the training philosophy of Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama—developing both the minister and the creative professional.

What You Will Learn

Participants will receive foundational and practical training in:

Film Production

Understanding the filmmaking process from concept and pre-production through production and completion.

Cinematography

Introduction to camera operation, shot composition, visual storytelling, lighting and practical camera exercises.

Acting for Stage & Screen

Developing believable performances while understanding the important differences between acting for theatre and acting before the camera.

Directing

Interpreting scripts, communicating creative vision, working with actors and coordinating the different elements of a production.

Screenwriting

Developing compelling faith-based stories and structuring them effectively for film.

Playwriting

Creating dramatic works for the stage with strong characters, conflicts, dialogue, themes and purposeful storytelling.

Stagecraft

Understanding rehearsals, blocking, performance spaces, backstage responsibilities and the practical process of mounting a stage production.

60% Practical - Learn by Doing

A major strength of the programme is its emphasis on practical application. Participants will move beyond lectures into camera exercises, acting sessions, script development, directing exercises, rehearsals, film-production activities and collaborative creative projects

The goal is that by the end of the programme, participants should have moved from simply having an interest or creative gift to possessing a stronger understanding of how to develop, organise and execute Christian theatre and film productions with purpose and excellence.

At Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama, Christian theatre and filmmaking are understood as more than creative professions—they are also instruments for Kingdom impact. Therefore, the programme will encourage participants to develop the right spiritual foundation, discipline, teamwork, excellence, responsibility and ministry consciousness required of Christian creatives.

Participants will be challenged to ask not only, “How can I become better at my craft?” but also, “How can this gift communicate Christ, minister to people and advance God’s Kingdom?”

The programme is suitable for beginners and emerging creatives. No previous professional theatre or filmmaking experience is required. What matters is a genuine desire to learn, the ability to read and write, availability for the intensive three-month training, and a passion for Christian theatre, filmmaking, storytelling or creative ministry.
