Our Curriculum Overview
A Commitment to Excellence
Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama aims at offering all our students a broad and balanced curriculum in Theatre Arts (Christian Drama) that provides rewarding and stimulating training, preparing them not merely for the stage but for meaningful cultural engagement and gospel-driven impact through excellence in Theatre Arts (Christian Drama).
Whether through our curriculum resources or practical immersion in Christian theatre, we ensure every student gets individualized guidance to thrive artistically, producing excellence not merely in grades but in lifelong impact through captivating theatrical performances.

Playwrighting
The Playwriting specialization at MZI trains students to craft original scripts that blend dramatic structure, character development, and biblical truth into compelling narratives for both stage and screen. Emphasis is placed on writing Christian theatre that evangelizes, edifies, and entertains while equipping graduates to create repertoires for local churches, professional troupes, and gospel media ministries.

Directing for Stage/Film
The Directing for Stage/Film specialization at MZI trains students to lead actors and design teams in translating the themes into live theatrical productions and screen projects, mastering principles such as script analysis, directorial approaches, styles & concepts; blocking, casting, and pacing across both mediums. Graduates emerge as servant-leaders who can create evangelically authentic performances while maintaining professional ethics, cultural sensitivity, and a collaborative rehearsal or set environment that honours Christ.

Sound Design
Students pursuing the Sound Design specialization at MZI receive comprehensive training in the technical and artistic exposure of aural production for live theatre and film, including sound system calibration, microphone selection and placement, digital playback sequencing, Foley effects creation, and layered ambient design. Through hands-on projects and critical script analysis, learners develop the ability to construct sound plots that reinforce dramatic tension, support character psychology, and align with the evangelical objectives of each production. Upon completion, graduates possess the professional competencies required to serve as sound engineers for church-based drama troupes, commercial stage venues, and gospel media houses, recognizing that sonic precision in theatre arts (Christian drama) carries evangelical weight equal to that of dialogue or visual composition.

Costume Design
The Costume Design specialization at MZI immerses students in the study of historical dress, fabric technology, character analysis, and the semiotics of clothing as a storytelling medium. Learners develop skills in sketching, pattern drafting, garment construction, dyeing, and aging techniques, enabling them to create costumes that reveal social status, psychological state, geographical origin, and evangelical transformation over the course of a narrative. Emphasis is placed on period accuracy for biblical and historical dramas, as well as contemporary design for modern parables, ensuring that every garment serves the director's vision and the production's evangelical message. Graduates exit the programme equipped to serve as costume designers for church productions, touring theatre companies, and Christian themed film sets, understanding that what a character wears communicates visually before a single line is spoken.

Make-Up
Make-Up skill at MZI constitutes a specialized field of study concerned with the modification of an actor's facial and bodily appearance to achieve specific dramatic objectives dictated by the script. The curriculum covers fundamental competencies including corrective and character make-up, prosthetic application, ageing techniques, wound simulation, and stylized finishes suitable for supernatural or angelic figures. Students engage with the physiological and material constraints of live performance versus film, learning to formulate products that withstand prolonged exposure to heat, perspiration, and lighting instruments without degradation. Historical research components require learners to document period-appropriate aesthetics for classical, medieval, or contemporary settings, ensuring visual coherence within the production's overall design concept. Health and safety protocols receive particular attention, including sanitation procedures, patch testing for allergies, and non-invasive removal techniques that respect the actor's physical well-being. Upon completion, graduates possess the technical proficiency to function as make-up department heads for evangelical stage productions, touring companies, or Christian themed film projects, with the understanding that subtle or dramatic facial transformation directly influences audience belief and receptivity to Jesus-centred narrative.
