History of Mount Zion Institute

The Origin of Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama

The history of Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama (MZI) can be traced to a burden for excellence in Christian drama ministry that emerged in the late 1980s. Before the establishment of the Institute, there was a growing concern stemming from Evangelist Mike Bamiloye and his team of passionate minds about the quality, effectiveness, and spiritual impact of drama presentations within the Church.

In 1987, a landmark event known as the Festival of Christian Drama was organized. The festival served as a platform where church drama groups and Christian drama enthusiasts from different parts of Nigeria were invited to present their stage productions. The event lasted for five days, running from Thursday through Monday, and attracted participants from various institutions and church organizations, including students from universities such as the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), and several other Christian fellowships.

The festival continued successfully in 1988 and 1989, drawing increasing participation from Christian drama groups across the nation. Alongside the dramatic presentations, seminars and training sessions were periodically conducted to encourage participants and strengthen drama ministry within the Church.

The Discovery of a Need for Training

As the Festival of Christian Drama grew, an important observation emerged. While many participants demonstrated passion and commitment to Christian drama, the overall quality of productions revealed significant gaps in knowledge and technical competence.

By 1989, it became increasingly evident that many drama ministers lacked formal training in dramatic arts, scriptwriting, stagecraft, directing, characterization, and ministry principles. Numerous errors were identified in the productions being presented. Although there was enthusiasm, many participants did not fully understand the foundational concepts and principles that make drama an effective tool for ministry.

This realization created a deep burden among the leadership of Mount Zion Faith Ministries. It became clear that the future of Christian drama ministry required more than festivals and performances; it required systematic training and intentional discipleship.

Birth of the Drama Ministers' Conference (1990)

The need for structured learning led to the establishment of the Drama Ministers’ Conference (DMC) in 1990.

Unlike the Festival of Christian Drama, which focused primarily on drama presentations, the Drama Ministers’ Conference was conceived as a training-oriented gathering designed to equip Christian drama practitioners with the knowledge, skills, and spiritual foundation necessary for effective ministry.

Participants came from different regions of Nigeria and beyond, creating a national platform for learning, networking, mentorship, and spiritual growth. The conference was born out of a conviction that Christian drama ministers needed more than talent; they needed training.

The Drama Ministers’ Conference would eventually become one of the most influential gatherings for Christian drama practitioners in Nigeria and remains a significant part of the Mount Zion vision.

Establishment of Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama (1991)

While the Drama Ministers’ Conference provided periodic training opportunities, the need for a more structured educational system became increasingly apparent. Consequently, Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama (MZI) was officially established in 1991.

The Institute began as a weekend training programme. The initial curriculum was designed around twelve weekends of intensive instruction. Students would typically arrive on Friday and remain until Sunday morning for classes, practical sessions, spiritual development activities, and ministry training.

A formal curriculum and academic calendar were developed to guide the programme. This marked the beginning of organized Christian drama education under the Mount Zion vision.

The response was encouraging, and by 1992, the programme expanded from twelve weekends to sixteen weekends, reflecting both growing demand and the increasing scope of training being provided.

Introduction of the Ordinary Certificate Programme (OCP)

As the Institute continued to evolve, it became apparent that an intensive residential training model could produce better learning outcomes than the extended weekend format.

This insight led to the introduction of an intensive crash programme, which proved highly effective. Consequently, the sixteen-weekend format was discontinued, and in 1992, the Institute launched the Ordinary Certificate Programme (OCP).

The OCP became the foundational training programme of Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama, providing students with comprehensive instruction in Christian drama ministry, acting, scriptwriting, directing, stage management, production techniques, ministry ethics, and spiritual development.

The success of the programme established a new academic structure that would guide the Institute’s growth for years to come.

Emergence of the Advanced Certificate Programme (ACP)

Following the success of the Ordinary Certificate Programme, Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama introduced the Advanced Certificate Programme (ACP).

The ACP was designed for graduates of the OCP who desired deeper training and greater ministry competence. Students who successfully completed the Ordinary Certificate Programme became eligible for admission into the Advanced Certificate Programme.

Together, the OCP and ACP formed a progressive academic pathway that strengthened the quality of Christian drama ministry training across Nigeria and beyond. These programmes continued to serve as the Institute’s primary training structure throughout much of the 1990s.

Leadership Diploma in Christian Drama (1998–2000)

As graduates matured in ministry and leadership responsibilities, the need for advanced leadership development became evident.

To address this need, Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama introduced the Leadership Diploma in Christian Drama (LDC), which operated from 1998 to 2000.

The programme was structured into two levels:

Lower Diploma

Students who had successfully completed both the Ordinary Certificate Programme (OCP) and the Advanced Certificate Programme (ACP) qualified for admission into the Lower Diploma level.

Higher Diploma

Graduates of the Lower Diploma proceeded to the Higher Diploma, where they received advanced instruction in leadership, ministry administration, discipleship, organizational development, and strategic Christian drama ministry.

The Leadership Diploma programmes ran concurrently with the OCP and ACP, creating a comprehensive educational framework that addressed both artistic excellence and ministry leadership.

Citadel of Scholasticity: Habitation of Faith

A major milestone in the history of Mount Zion Institute was achieved in 2002 with the acquisition of Habitation of Faith, which became the permanent venue for the Institute’s training activities.

The establishment of a dedicated campus environment provided greater opportunities for academic development, residential training, practical workshops, conferences, and ministry activities.

Habitation of Faith significantly strengthened the Institute’s capacity to train future generations of Christian drama ministers and provided a stable foundation for future expansion.

The Vision for Degree Education

As the Institute matured, discussions began concerning the possibility of offering degree-level education.

Around 2006, the vision for a degree programme was formally conceived. However, the leadership recognized that establishing a degree-awarding institution required extensive academic structures, regulatory understanding, and institutional partnerships.

To facilitate this transition, discussions were initiated with Redeemer’s University regarding a potential academic collaboration. The original intention was to develop a pathway that would eventually lead to degree programmes in Christian drama and related disciplines.

Although a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was considered and significant progress was made, changes in leadership and other institutional factors prevented the initiative from fully materializing at the time.

Nevertheless, the vision remained alive and continued to shape the Institute’s long-term strategic planning.

Diploma Expansion and the Birth of Streams (2020)

Building upon decades of training experience, Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama entered a new phase of curricula development in 2020 with the commencement of a reviewed diploma structure. This was facilitated by the affiliation to Ajayi Crowther University.

During this period, six diploma sessions referred to as Streams (Streams 1 – 6) were successfully conducted. These programmes represented another important step toward expanding access to Christian drama education while preserving the Institute’s commitment to formation founded on the vision, ministry excellence, and professional competence.

Largely further, the diploma streams further demonstrated the enduring relevance of the Institute’s mission in preparing drama ministers for service in churches, mission fields, educational institutions, and the entertainment industry.

Academic Programmes

As part of its commitment to providing quality  theatre education, MZI offers a range of academic programmes designed to develop both ministry competence and creative excellence.

In a significant step towards expanding higher education opportunities in Christian theatre arts, Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama, in collaboration with Redeemer’s University, now offers:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Arts (Christian Drama)
  • Direct Entry Admission into Theatre Arts (Christian Drama)
  • Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Theatre Arts (Christian Drama)

This collaboration enhances quality assurance and consolidates on structural paradigms critical to validation of curricula distribution by qualified personnel.

The Prospect of Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama

Today, Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama stands as one of the pioneering institutions dedicated to Christian drama education and ministry training in Nigeria and beyond having alumni subsidiaries and institution sparsed abroad.

The Institute’s long-term vision is to evolve into the Mount Zion University of Christian Drama, a specialized university that will provide comprehensive education across multiple disciplines related to ministry, theatre arts, communication, leadership, media, and creative arts.

Complementing this vision is the development of the Mount Zion Film Academy, which is being established as an independent technical training hub for filmmaking and media production. The Academy is envisioned as a practical skills centre that will equip students, interns, and professionals with industry-relevant competencies while supporting the broader academic goals of the Institute.

From a humble Festival of Christian Drama in 1987 to a respected training institution with a vision for university status, the history of Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama reflects a consistent commitment to raising knowledgeable, spiritually grounded, and professionally equipped Christian drama ministers for global impact.
