MZI-RUN 200 Level Students Use Community Theatre to Promote Collective Responsibility at Òkè Ìsokùn Community

Community Theatre as a Tool for Social Change

The Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama in collaboration with Redeemer’s University (MZI-RUN) continues to demonstrate the transformative power of theatre through practical community engagement. On Saturday, 13 June 2026, the Institute’s 200 Level students staged a compelling Community Theatre performance at Òkè Ìsokùn Community, reinforcing the role of theatre as an effective instrument for social awareness, education, and development.

The performance formed part of the practical assessment requirements for CCMASS THA 210 (Community Theatre) during the Second Semester of the 2025/2026 Academic Session. The exercise provided students with an opportunity to apply classroom theories and learning experiences in a real-life community setting, embodying the principles of experiential learning and Theatre for Development (TfD).

Àgbájọ Ọwọ́: A Drama of Collective Responsibility

At the centre of the engagement was Àgbájọ Ọwọ́, a thought-provoking play written by Anabel Emesakoru. The production examined critical social issues affecting many Nigerian communities, including negligence, selfishness, poor community participation, insecurity, and environmental degradation.

Through engaging storytelling, dramatic conflict, and community-centred dialogue, the play challenged residents to reflect on the consequences of silence, indifference, and the failure to work together for the common good. The narrative underscored the timeless African principle that collective problems require collective solutions, encouraging community members to embrace active participation in safeguarding their environment and addressing societal challenges.

The production served not only as an academic exercise but also as a practical intervention aimed at stimulating discussion and promoting positive social action within the community.

Building Partnerships Through Community Engagement

The success of the programme was made possible through collaborative efforts between MZI-RUN and the leadership of Òkè Ìsokùn Community.

The initial contact was facilitated by Mr. Abioye Adebowale, former Chairman of the community, whose support helped establish the connection between the institution and the community. Mr. Adebowale subsequently introduced the project to the current Chairman, Mr. Awosiyan Johnson Olapoju, whose leadership and cooperation contributed significantly to the successful hosting of the event.

This partnership exemplifies the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and local communities in addressing social concerns through creative and participatory approaches.

Distinguished Guests and Participants

The performance attracted a diverse audience comprising community leaders, residents, staff members, and students of the Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama.

Present at the event was the Chairman of Òkè Ìsokùn Community, Mr. Awosiyan Johnson Olapoju, alongside members of staff of the Institute, including Dr. Chidera Obasi, Dr. Olumide Oki, Mr. Jones Profit, Mr. Omidiora Oyewole Samuel, and Mr. Festus Dairo.

Also in attendance were students from the 100 Level, 300 Level, 400 Level, and Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) programmes, who joined community members in witnessing the practical demonstration of theatre’s capacity to educate, inspire, and transform society.

Advancing Theatre Education Through Experiential Learning

Community Theatre remains a vital component of theatre arts education because it enables students to move beyond theoretical instruction into active social engagement. By interacting directly with communities and addressing real societal issues through performance, students develop critical skills in communication, research, collaboration, cultural sensitivity, and social advocacy.

The Òkè Ìsokùn Community Theatre project reflects the commitment of the Mount Zion Institute of Christian Drama and Redeemer’s University to producing graduates who are not only academically competent but also socially responsible and equipped to use theatre as a vehicle for positive change.

As MZI-RUN continues to advance Christian drama education and theatre arts training in Nigeria, initiatives such as this reaffirm the institution’s dedication to community engagement, practical learning, and the transformative impact of the performing arts.
